Walk it out…

So, this weekend, Neal and I traveled to Philadelphia to see his mom at the closing ceremonies of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for breast cancer. She worked so hard to raise the money to participate and trained hard to be able to withstand the 3-day walk.

I wanted to do something for her, so I made some cookies using pink M&M’s.

Of course, Simone the cookie monster chewed through the bags and I had to rebag them, but anyway, on Sunday we headed to the Villanova stadium. Traffic sucked, but we made it there in time.

Then the crew lined up and in came the walkers, all 3,100+ of them. It was really cool. It was a sea of pink and white.

Even after walking for three days, sleeping in tents and conquering 60 miles, the men and women still had enough to energy to jump around to the music. Neal, his dad and I searched the crowd for Neal’s mom, but it was impossible to tell anyone apart down on the field.

The best part was when they brought in the breast cancer survivors. All the walkers took off one shoe each and held it in the air. It was such a beautiful and moving sight. I got teary.

It was a really moving ceremony. It made me thankful for my health, but hopeful for the future, that with determination we might one day find a cure. My mother-in-law wrote about the reasons she wanted to participate in the walk, and it really touched me when she said she wanted to do it for her future grandchildren. It meant a lot that she was already looking to help my children, to try to prevent them from ever suffering from breast cancer. She completed all 60 miles, but even if she hadn’t, I would have been proud of her no matter what.

I don’t think she’ll be thrilled I’m posting her picture, but I don’t care, haha. I’m proud of her for what she did. Go Bette!

Also, while there, I heard of the phrase Save 2nd Base, which I think is freakin’ hilarious and awesome. I might have to order a shirt or hat. Hey, it’s for a good cause!
