A day to ourselves…

Christmas Day casserole

So the egg casserole turned out pretty well. My mom’s on Christmas Day tastes better, but I think that’s combo of the fact that my mom made it, and… well… it’s Christmas Day!

So, we tried to get up fairly early, because we planned to go for a little hike. As is typical for holidays and what not with us, we don’t buy each other gifts. We just try to make a definite date to spend time together. We both like the outdoors, and even more so since we went camping with our friends two years ago.

Neal talked to his barber (yeah, I know, he’s such a girl) who recommended we go to Indian Steps Museum in Airville, right along the Susquehanna River. Indian Steps is a museum, grounds and picnic area maintained by the York County Conservation Society.

It took us about 45 minutes to get there, and it was really peaceful. Just for a history lesson, Indian Steps Museum is named after the steps the Susquehannock Indians etched into the rocks on the side of the river for footholds while fishing. The steps aren’t visible anymore, because the river covers them. Pretty cool, huh? We walked around the grounds of the museum for a little.

Then, we walked across the street to the Ulmer-Root Haines trail, because the museum employees told us there was a small waterfall on the trail.

The employees told us the waterfall was only a trickle, and while it wasn’t huge, it was more than a trickle. And sooooo pretty and peaceful.

We walked around the trail for a little. It was nice to just be away from people. The trail didn’t look like it was used often. We saw a lot of birds, since it’s a bird sanctuary, but other than that, all we saw was a skittery groundhog.

We walked back to the museum ground to eat our peanut butter and jelly picnic lunch. This was our view for our picnic table. The museum is to the left.

It was such a peaceful day. But it was stinkin’ hot outside, so after our lunch, we were ready to head home.

We relaxed the rest of the day and then I started getting dinner together. We had salmon on the grill, local corn on the cob and onion potatoes. It was really, really good.

But I burned my arm carrying the dish the potatoes were in. It hurt like a mo-fo. I don’t think I’ve ever burnt myself that bad. Today (Sunday) it’s really red, but seems to be healing up. Ugh. I can’t imagine being in a fire and having major burns all over my body. **shudder**

Neal got me bandaged up.

So then it was time for dessert. And what is Neal’s favorite dessert, that he requests all the time?

DIRT.

Yeah, you heard me right, the chocolate pudding topped with Oreo cookie crumbs and topped with gummi worms. The most elementary, easy dessert known to man.

I’ve made apple crumb pie, cherry pie, raspberry and peach tart, and red velvet cake with buttercream icing FROM SCRATCH, but yet, all Neal really wants is….

DIRT.

Why do I even bother?

So anyway, little boy enjoyed his dessert.

He was so funny. When I told him earlier in the day that I was making DIRT, he was very concerned that I forgot the gummi worms. Of course, I remembered them. Can’t have DIRT without gummi worms!
